The best carrot and lentil soup

Not only is this popular carrot soup recipe uniquely flavoured, it’s also incredibly easy to whip up so that anyone can truly perfect it.

With a spicy kick thrown into the mix, this tasty meal will definitely keep you on your toes while also pleasing the taste buds of all of your guests. Don’t forget to serve it up with a slice of naan bread to soak it all up and enjoy!


  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • pinch chilli flakes
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 600g carrots, washed and coarsely grated (no need to peel)
  • 140g split red lentils
  • 1l hot vegetable stock (from a cube is fine)
  • 125ml milk
  • plain yogurt and naan bread, to serve


  1. Heat large saucepan. Dry-fry cumin seeds and chilli flakes for 1 min, or until they start to jump around pan and become aromatic. Scoop out about half with spoon and set aside.
  2. Add olive oil, carrots, split red lentils, hot vegetable stock and milk to pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15 mins until lentils have swollen and softened.
  3. Process soup with stick blender until smooth. Season to taste. Top with a dollop of plain yogurt and a sprinkling of the reserved toasted spices. Serve with warmed naan breads.
