Delicious chocolate caramel slice

This low-effort slice will forever be a hit with everyone who tries it.

It’s a classic recipe that has stood the test of time because of how easy it is to make and how delicious it tastes when it’s done. Once it’s ready, slice into squares and store in an air-tight container in the fridge to protect it from the summer heat and sneak a piece whenever you’re feeling peckish! 

Ingredients

  • Melted butter, to grease
  • 125g butter, at room temperature
  • 80g caster sugar
  • 190g plain flour
  • 1 x 395g can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 tablespoons golden syrup
  • 60g butter, extra
  • 150g dark chocolate, roughly chopped

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 160C. 
  2. Brush a square 20cm (base measurement) cake pan with melted butter to lightly grease.
  3. Line the base and two sides with non-stick baking paper, allowing the paper to overhang the sides. 
  4. Use an electric mixer to beat the butter and sugar in a medium bowl.
  5. Add the flour and beat until just combined. 
  6. Use your hands to bring the mixture together to from a ball. 
  7. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Use the back of a metal spoon to gently press the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. 
  8. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside for 15 minutes to cool. 
  9. Place the sweetened condensed milk, golden syrup and 40g of the extra butter in a small non-stick saucepan over medium heat. 
  10. Cook, stirring constantly, for 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from heat. 
  11. Spoon caramel over the biscuit base and smooth the surface. Set aside for 30 minutes to cool. 
  12. Place the chocolate and remaining butter in a small heatproof bowl. Place the bowl over a small saucepan of barely simmering water over low heat. 
  13. Use a dry metal spoon to stir gently for 2 minutes. Pour the chocolate mixture evenly over the caramel filling and smooth the surface with a knife. 
  14. Place in the fridge for 10 minutes.
