Matchsticks have long been a favourite dessert treat for the young and old, with the combination of pastry, jam and cream coming together to create the perfect afternoon snack.

The mix of crispy pastry and sweet cream just melts in the mouth and leaves you wanting more. But better yet, it is a dessert which can be whipped up in a matter of minutes, ready for an unexpected family gathering or a visit from friends.

Although each person has their own spin on the original recipe, one mum’s super simple version has gained a lot of attention online, requiring just a few ingredients to create the delicious dessert. The mum took to social media this week to share the recipe on the Aldi Mum’s Facebook group, with many raving about the mouth-watering treat.

“Quick dessert, a little messy to eat but oh so yum,” she wrote on the post alongside a photo of the matchsticks. “Aldi puff pastry, strawberry jam and whipped chantilly cream = matches.

“Cut your puff sheets to required sizes, bake in a hot oven [at] 200 degrees till golden, allow to cool and assemble. Chantilly cream is cream whipped with a dash of vanilla essence and a little icing sugar.”

The group’s other followers thanked the mum for sharing the recipe and agreed it was as super tasty as promised. While others added their tips for making the dessert even more delicious.

“Love matchsticks! We put melted chocolate on top of ours, recipe been in our family for years!” one person wrote on the Facebook post. “Looks delicious. Chocolate ganache on top could be yummy too,” another agreed. “That looks tasty! I love Aldi puff pastry,” a third said.

If matchsticks aren’t your thing then here is another easy dessert recipe to try:

2-ingredient vanilla slice

We know nothing quite beats the real thing, but one mum’s recipe for a two-ingredient vanilla slice has sent the Internet into a frenzy. Just weeks ago Linda Špadina shared her super simple recipe to the Christmas Mums Facebook group where it got the big thumbs up from fellow parents.

The mum explained the dessert was made with just two ingredients – slices of pre-made puff pastry and Aeroplane’s famous Vanilla Dessert Mix, which is available at Coles.  While Linda chose to make the treat in the shape of Christmas trees, it would work well in square shapes when it’s not the festive season.

“Made Christmas Tree Vanilla Slice today … so delicious,” she wrote. “Lost count how many I ate. I used Aeroplane’s Dessert Mix and puff pastry. I’ll be adding this to my dessert platter on Christmas Day. So easy to make.”

Linda explained she cooked the bottom layer a little bit less so it wasn’t quite as puffed-up as the top ones and pressed it down with her hands to flatten it.

The group’s other followers praised the mum for her tasty Christmas hack, with one person commenting: “Thanks for sharing this, will be trying it for sure. Merry Christmas.” Another said: “They look so delicious and cute!!” While a third wrote “I was just looking for a dessert to make for a lunch on Sunday, this looks perfect.”
