We’ve come a long way since a simple two-tier fruitcake with marzipan icing sufficed as a wedding cake.
Extravagant wedding cakes are nothing new, with donut cakes and cheese wheels all making a popular appearance in recent years, but now Sam Jacobson chef and owner of Stargazy in Philadelphia, is offering another option for couples: savoury, meat-filled, tiered pies.
When two of his regular customer got engaged they asked him to create something extra-special for their big day so he baked them a meat pie wedding cake.
“For the past couple of years, I have been dreaming of putting together a beautiful wedding pie,” he wrote on Instagram. “Thanks to the lovely Sarah and Ben, today I finally had reason to do so, and I’m so happy and proud of how it turned out.”
The meat pie craze is already blowing up on social media and Food and Wine is calling his creation the next big thing in wedding cakes.
“WOW this is so awesome!” one commentator wrote. Another added, “Now I have a reason to get married.”
Jacobson’s three-tier creation features two pork pies and one vegetarian layer with spring veggies and eggs to accomodate for the non-meat eaters at the nuptials. All in all, the meat pie creation took him about 12 hours to make.
Inspired by his first attempt, Jacobson made another meat pie wedding cake to celebrate the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The six-layered cake included pies filled with pickles and boiled eggs, and breakfast-inspired layer with sausage, bacon and cheese, which he sold by the slice.
We haven’t seen the meat pie wedding cake craze hit Australia yet, and we’re not too sure whether that’s a good or bad thing.
