Wheel of Fortune is one of the world’s most loved gameshows. While an Aussie version hasn’t been on screens in more than a decade, international versions of the quiz show continue to captivate audiences around the world.
It’s always fun to join in and try and guess the answer and part of the show’s charm is when contestants get the answers very wrong. That’s exactly what happened on a recent episode of the American version of the show.
A contestant called Melanie had just one more letter to guess to win the major prize of the day. Unfortunately for her, the answer was wrong on so many levels. In addition to failing to win, Melanie also spelled out a rather raunchy answer.
“Are you going all the way here or not?” host Pat Sajak asked the contestant.
“I’d like to solve,” she said confidently. “Bridal and gold shower.”
The audience gasped as the host apologised and buzzed the contestant. Gold shower wasn’t the answer the host was looking for.
Her raunchy “golden shower” faux pas meant she was out of the game, while another contestant Jenn correctly solved the puzzle. The actual answer was “Bridal and cold shower.”
Jenn laughed off her awkward mistake, although she didn’t go home empty-handed. The host still awarded her $1,000 (AU$1,417, UK£761).
When shared on YouTube, viewers were quick to praise Jenn’s awkward blunder.
One person wrote: “I love the audience’s shocked moan in reaction.”
Another was impressed that host Pat was in on how filthy the answer sounded.
“It did not get past Pat for one second,” the wrote. “There are a LOT of smiles there.”
A third comment added: “I wish I could watch that girl’s reaction when someone tells her what that means…”
It’s not the first time in recent times where a quiz show answer has left audiences in fits of laughter. Last month, fans of The Chase in the United Kingdom were in hysterics when host Bradley Walsh and star Anne “The Governess” Hegerty couldn’t stop laughing at an inappropriate answer. This time, it was a question about marine life that set them off.
“Which if these is not a genuine species of starfish,” the 58-year-old host asked a contestant.
The contestant had the choice of the goose foot starfish, the red-knobbed starfish or the chocolate starfish. Bradley managed to get the first two possible answers out, but struggled when it came to saying “chocolate starfish” aloud.
He began giggling, before keeling over laughing at the answer – which has very rude connotations. The audience then began to laugh and Bradley completely lost it when he looked up at Anne, who was shaking as she tried to control her laughter.
