Attention fans of The Crown! Hit Netflix show announces extra season

Jul 11, 2020

Fans of The Crown can rejoice this weekend as it has been confirmed that the show has been extended for a sixth season, having previously been scheduled to end after season five. The news was confirmed by streaming service Netflix on Friday, in a statement which read: “News from the palace: we can confirm there will be a sixth (and final) season of @TheCrownNetflix, in addition to the previously announced five!”

The show’s creator Peter Morgan said the decision was made after it became clear to him that the story could not be told in just five instalments. He said: “As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons.”

Fans were ecstatic over the news, with one writing: “OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD.” Another commented: “Two years of Imelda S and Lesley M, awesome!”

While another said: “‘The crown must win. Must always win.’ YAY! 2 seasons with Imelda! I hope for more flashbacks of the young queen there too. #clairefoy she started the power of the crown yes!”

While others speculated about which events the show would dare to cover, and whether it would bring the show up to the present day with the likes of Prince Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle and recent controversy surrounding Prince Andrew.

It comes just days after Netflix revealed who will take on the iconic role of Princess Margaret in the fifth series of the program. British screen legend Lesley Manville will take over as the Queen’s younger sister, following incredible performances from Helena Bonham Carter, who played Margaret in the third and upcoming fourth series, and Vanessa Kirby who portrayed the royal rebel in the show’s first two series.

Netflix confirmed the news on Twitter last week as they shared a statement penned by Manville, 64, who is best known for roles on both the small and silver screen, including her Oscar-nominated performance in The Phantom Thread, and stints in the likes of Mum, Soldier Soldier and Harlots.

“I could not be happier to be playing Princess Margaret,” Manville said in a statement. “The baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses and I really don’t want to let the side down. Furthermore, to play siblings with my dear friend Imelda Staunton will be nothing short of a complete joy.”

Earlier this year it was also revealed that iconic British actress Imelda Staunton would take over the role of Her Majesty the Queen when the show enters its final instalment. She will inherit the role from Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, who portrayed the Queen in series three and the upcoming fourth season, which is expected to air later this year.

“I have loved watching The Crown from the very start,” Staunton said at the time. “As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts. I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion.”
