Anne Hegerty has shown her support for The Chase UK host Bradley Walsh, coming out in defence of the presenter after a viewer slammed him for his “dull” personality.

The popular host, who is often praised for his role on the quiz show, was targeted by one social media user on Twitter recently, as they replied to a post in celebration of the program’s 10 year anniversary.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US,” the post, shared by the show’s official account, read. “We’re ten years old TODAY. Thank you @BradleyWalsh, @MarkLabbett, @TheShaunWallace, @annehegerty, @PaulSinha and @jenlion for all your incredible work!

“And to all of you at home: THANK YOU. Here’s to TEN MORE YEARS.”

While the post received a lot of praise from fans who congratulated them on reaching such a milestone, one viewer took aim at Walsh for his presenting abilities.

The disgruntled viewer claimed the UK version needed a star more like Australia’s host on the show and said Walsh made him “fall asleep”.

“So long as you find a host like Andrew O’Keefe (who hosts the Australian version of the game show) who has charisma is witty and knowledgeable,” they commented.

“Bradley Walsh is dull. I could fall asleep when he’s reading the questions.”

Hegerty, who is known as ‘The Governess’ on the popular program didn’t stand for the comments however, hitting back at the viewer and their claims.

“I think you’re confusing ‘dull’ with ‘subtle’ and ‘deadpan,” she replied.

The fan later responded: “Part of the reason I watch is not to outdo the contestants but for extra facts the Chasers (you in particular) and the host throw in. Bradley contributes nothing, deadpan and subtle are not qualities required for a game show like this.”

To which Hegerty replied: “Bradley allows the Chasers to do that, which was the original brief. He doesn’t intervene even when he does know the answer. Deadpan and subtle are among the qualities that set The Chase UK apart from other game shows.”

Meanwhile, others were much more supportive,  congratulating Walsh and the team of Chasers for their “marvellous” work.

“Many happy returns to you all at The Chase @ITVChase,” one person commented. “A wonderful team and marvellous production… keep up the great work you all do and here is to the next ten glorious years.”

Another wrote: “Happy birthday @ITVChase and the brilliant @BradleyWalsh and all the fantastic Chasers. This is one of TV program I cannot get enough of. May you all be doing the same job for the next 10 years and longer.”

While a third added: “Happy 10th birthday to The Chase! Absolutely fantastic show! Love Bradders to bits! All the Chasers are equally as talented and funny! Here’s to another 10 years!”

Are you a fan of The Chase? Do you like watching the British version of the show? What do you think of Bradley Walsh as a presenter?
