Sir Elton John and actor Taron Egerton performed a beautiful duet of hit song “Tiny Dancer” during the 27th annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party.
The young actor, who plays the great Elton in upcoming movie Rocketman, accompanied the singer for the special performance, showing great courage in front of a crowd of talented actors.
Standing front and centre Taron began the song singing alone, while Elton kept him in beat on the piano.
“It’s funny how life turns out isn’t it?” he said before launching into song.
Following Elton’s cue Taron showed off his musical talent, singing the much-loved song perfectly in tune.
The crowd watched on in awe as Elton joined in singing as Taron hit the chorus, as if the pair had been performing together for years on end.
Once finished the crowd erupted into applause showing their appreciation of both Elton and Taron who have worked alongside each other during the filming of Rocketman.
The video of the performance has since been shared online with fans quick to comment on the actor’s beautiful singing.
“You saw clearly how much this meant to Taron at the start – he got a little emotional in the moment,” one person wrote on YouTube.
“Beautiful. Elton’s music makes me cry and long for my youth and my health, It takes me to a place so long ago when life was amazing. His music captures the soul,” another commented.
While a third wrote: “Damn. Taron surely can sing. He sounds really good. Can’t wait to see Rocketman“.
The performance follows the release of a behind-the-scenes video of the filming of Rocketman which follows Elton’s life and career as he prepares to release his 1972 breakthrough album Honky Chateau, from the highs to the lows.
Director Dexter Fletcher appears in the clip and says on camera: “Taron’s actually singing in the film. And he’s so convincing. His voice is incredible.”
Fletcher also directed Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody recently, but while lead actor Rami Malek’s voice was blended with recordings of lead star Freddie Mercury in the hit, Egerton will sing all of the songs himself in Rocketman.
Meanwhile, the film’s music producer Giles Martin reveals shortly after that he recalls Elton once saying: “I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone sing my songs better than Taron.”
Martin adds: “The great thing about Elton is that he wants Taron’s interpretations of his songs.”
“I don’t think there’s anyone in the world who could have played Elton,” he goes on. “I think it’s Taron’s role.”
