After weeks in self-isolation the boredom is no doubt starting to set in, as the to-do list gets noticeably smaller and the fridge becomes overloaded with baked goodies. This may have already led you to your smartphones for entertainment, with social media platforms providing some short-term relief.

But have you considered downloading some new apps to keep you occupied? While it’s not advised to spend hours in front of a screen each day, there are some fun apps which can help relieve at least some of your boredom for brief periods.

Ted talks

Ted talks are famous around the world, with people from all disciplines of life coming forward to share their stories and knowledge about different issues and topics. While some are available online through websites such as YouTube, you can find a big collection of talks through the dedicated app.

You can browse through the entire Ted talks library and choose which topic you’d like to learn more about. The app also allows you to create your own playlist and add videos that you want to watch. Or, if you’d prefer, you can download the videos to watch at a later date.

Google Play Books

Reading a book is always a good way to escape from the every day world, but if you don’t feel like picking up a novel, or your eyes just need a break, you can listen to someone else read the stories through apps such as Google Play Books.

There is a huge collection of audio books available to choose from including fictional novels and textbooks (if you’re looking to learn something new).

Scrabble Go

The Scrabble Go app will help to keep your brain active in self-isolation. It works just like the physical board game, with each person given seven letters to work into a word and place on the board.

You can choose to either play against the computer, friends and family who also have the app, or complete strangers. There is no time limit so you can take as long as you like to think of a word and build your score.

Family Feud Live

You won’t have Grant Denyer to host your game, but the Family Feud Live game will still keep you entertained and help you to stay connected with friends, family members and other app users.

The app is inspired by the popular TV show Family Feud and offers four game modes to choose from. You can choose either one-on-one challenges, a fast money round, elimination tournaments or live, which is where you can choose who you want to compete against and go at your own pace. Just like the TV show you’ll have to answer Feud surveys to win points. The person with the most points at the end is the winner.
