Sir Ringo Starr and Sir Paul McCartney have joined forces to deliver some new music, with the pair announcing they have reunited in the studio to record a cover of a track written by their late former band mate John Lennon shortly before he died.

Music fans received the exciting news on Friday, as it emerged that Starr and McCartney have recorded a version of ‘Grow Old With Me’, which was written by Lennon for inclusion on his final album Double Fantasy shortly before he was shot dead in December 1980.

Starr released a statement confirming the exciting news, in which he revealed it was record producer Jack Douglas who inspired his decision to record the song. He said: “Jack asked if I ever heard The Bermuda Tapes, John’s demos from that time. And I had never heard all this.

“The idea that John was talking about me in that time before he died, well, I’m an emotional person. And I just loved this song. I sang it the best that I could.”

Ringo added: “I do well up when I think of John this deeply. And I’ve done my best. We’ve done our best. The other good thing is that I really wanted Paul to play on it, and he said yes. Paul came over and he played bass and sings a little bit on this with me.

“So John’s on it in a way. I’m on it and Paul’s on it. It’s not a publicity stunt. This is just what I wanted. And the strings that Jack arranged for this track, if you really listen, they do one line from ‘Here Comes The Sun’. So in a way, it’s the four of us.”

The song is set to appear on Ringo’s 20th solo album, What’s My Name, which will be released next month. However it’s not the first time the surviving members of the Fab Four have reunited to record music though, as the pair have teamed up on numerous occasions previously.

Their most recent reunion took place on stage at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in July when Ringo made a surprise appearance during one of Paul’s live shows.

Standing in front of a crowd of adoring fans at the sold out concert, the 77-year-old Liverpudlian announced: “We’ve got a surprise for us, a surprise for you, a surprise for everyone: Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only, Ringo Starr.”

The crowd erupted into applause as the drummer walked up to his bandmate, with fans cheering and waving their hands in excitement while McCartney embraced his friend in a hug and planted a kiss on his forehead.

“Peace and love everybody,” Starr yelled out to the packed-out stadium, before making his way to the drum set behind. “I love you man,” McCartney said to the talented musician, as he prepared to play some hit tunes for his many fans.

To the delight of concert attendees, the two launched straight into The Beatles’ classics ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ and ‘Helter Skelter’.

Despite being in their 70s, the musicians put on a spectacular show, rocking out to some of their best-known tunes with big smiles spread across their faces. The performance has since been shared online with fans claiming they had “extreme goosebumps” listening to the two play together once again.
