Aussie icon Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum has opened up about the “huge relief” he felt after mending his long-time friendship with pop superstar Sir Elton John, finally bringing their seven-year feud to an end.

The pair, who have been friends for decades, suffered a sensational fall-out in 2012 after Meldrum aired controversial footage of Sir Elton criticising fellow singer Madonna.

Sitting down for a chat with Molly, Elton was caught on camera calling the Like a Virgin singer a “fairground stripper” and a “nightmare” during an interview for Channel Seven’s Sunday Night program.

Unsurprisingly the interview made headlines around the world however Elton, 72, claimed the comments were never meant to go to air, sparking a rift between the old friends that would last seven years, with the pair failing to see eye to eye ever since.

But it seems the pair have finally managed put the past behind them as the Rocketman singer paid tribute to his friend during one of his farewell shoes at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena over the weekend.

“We’ve had tears, we’ve had laughter but we’ve had friendship that’s lasted so long,” Elton told the crowd. “And I want to pay tribute to him because I don’t think anyone from Australia has done more for music in Australia than Molly Meldrum.”

Meldrum said he was reduced to tears as a result of Elton’s comments, telling Channel Seven: “There were tears rolling down my cheeks. Such a long friend of mine and we’ve been through the ups and downs.”

Elton also gifted Molly with a signed copy of his book, which read: “Dear Molly thank you for all the years of love and support, so many great times and so many not so great times although great memories, love Elton.”

The rekindling of their friendship comes after the 76-year-old former Countdown host made an emotional plea to the Your Song star to fix their relationship during an appearance on Sunday Night in October this year.

Speaking about their close relationship, Molly said Elton had always been there to help him out, telling the program: “We’ve had the most amazing journey for a long, long time. We’ve been through the ups and we’ve been through the downs.”

Struggling to contain his emotions he added: “[But] A friendship like ours is worth keeping forever.”
