He owes the deceased a debt.

A man is attending the funeral of a close friend. One of the mourners sitting in the row him behind stands up and admits he owes the deceased an outstanding debt of $100.

“I am a man of my word,” he says, as he drops 10 $10 notes into the open coffin and makes his way back to his seat.

This prompts another mourner who also declares: “I too am an honest man, I owed $100 as well.” He places two $50 bills in the casket and steps away.

The man, having seen this, makes his way to the front of the church and says: “I cannot live with this debt on my conscience, I too owe our generous, late friend $100.”

So he pulls out his cheque book, writes a cheque for $300 and drops it into the coffin, taking out the $200 in change.
