How to avoid the bulge on a cruise

When it comes to cruising there’s a lot to love; the relaxed vibe, the entertainment, the adventurous stopovers and especially the food and drinks. The problem is sometimes we tend to indulge a little too much and end up coming home with a few more kilos than we left with. It doesn’t always have to be like this though and with a few tips you can come back looking fit and fresh and better than ever!

Abstain

Skip the cocktails and go for something simpler instead.

One of the best parts when it comes to cruising is kicking back with a drink and enjoying a tipple. Unfortunately, most alcoholic drinks are laden with calories that go straight to your waistline and slow down your metabolism. Steer clear of cocktails and try mixing your favourite spirit with soda water or a low-calorie soft drink.

Walk

Stretch your legs on the deck.

Make the most of the deck space and take a brisk walk around the ship in the morning and evening. If you can, give the lifts a miss too and take the stairs instead. Pools are great for low-impact exercise so throw on your swimsuit and jump in for a few laps.

Cycle

Jump off at port cities and hire a bike to explore the town. Many of the larger cruise liners will have bikes on board that you can take off with you or will be able to organise the hiring for you.

Downsize

It’s easy to load up your plate at the buffet and this can be one of the biggest downfalls when it comes to reigning in wait gain of a cruise. Try serving yourself on a small plate rather than a large and limit the amount of times you go back for seconds.

Resit

Treat yourself you a hot brekky, but not every day.

Instead of eating a hot cooked breakfast every morning stick to something a bit more simple, like you would at home. Take advantage of the fresh fruit on offer pair it with whole-grain toast for a your morning fibre hit.
