Australia's favourite landmark has been named and it's not what you'd think

The Opera House has long been hailed as Australia’s greatest landmark, but the mighty sails have been knocked off their perch by an unassuming and nobel alternative.

Travel website TripAdvisor ran a poll on the country’s top landmark, tallying thousands of votes to get their result and coming in at first place is the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

The beautiful memorial is a touching tribute to our fallen soldiers and a moving place to visit for both Australians and tourists alike.

The memorial beat last years’ winner the Opera House, which came in second followed by the Sydney Harbour Bridge in third place.

VisitCanberra Director Ian Hill said the TripAdvisor award capped off a record year for the national capital, with 4.4 million visitors in 2015.

“It’s fantastic, and fitting recognition for one of Australia’s most significant attractions,” Mr Hill told News Corp.

“A visit to the Australian War Memorial should be on everyone’s must-do list.”
