3 natural denture cleaning tips that’ll keep your smile pearly white

Dentures take a lot of getting used to, but the upside is that they can look great, and stay looking great if you treat them well. 

But many commercially available toothpastes, mouthwashes, and dental creams can be too abrasive for dentures, wearing them down over time so that they lose their gloss, while bleaching products can discolour them.

So, how do you keep your dentures looking pearly white but also protect them from abrasion?  Luckily, there are a few natural ways that will rid your dentures of bacteria as well as keeping them looking bright.

1. Baking Soda or bicarb

Baking soda is known to clean silver, fight dandruff, and can be used as a great mouthwash, and one of its many ‘talents’ is also cleaning dentures.

Baking soda is often used in toothpaste and is great for loosening plaque and debris. To make your own baking soda toothpaste, mix two teaspoons of baking soda with a small amount of water and make a paste.

Apply the paste to your dentures with a soft bristled brush and scrub away any food debris or discolouration. This method can be used everyday.

2. Microwave

As strange as it sounds you can also clean your dentures using a microwave.

Scientists have recently found that it is beneficial to give your dentures a zap in the microwave for three minutes each week because the heat kills bacteria and sanitises them. When using this method you will still need to clean your dentures daily, but it is a great way to great rid of bacteria.

If your dentures contain metal, do not use this method.

3. Vinegar

Vinegar has a number of uses and one of these is as an excellent denture disinfectant that also works to remove any calcium or tartar build up.

To clean your dentures with vinegar simply fill a glass with half vinegar and half warm water. Soak your dentures in the solution for a minimum of 30 minutes or overnight. Give them a good rinse before putting them back in your mouth.
