About Dr Marie Burke

Dr Marie Burke is a Radiation Oncologist for GenesisCare in Queensland and was recently appointed GenesisCare’s Chief Medical Officer for Oncology Australia. Dr Burke has special clinical interests in breast, gynaecological and skin cancer. She is also interested in patient satisfaction, quality control in Radiation Oncology and mentoring junior colleagues. Dr Burke qualified in medicine from the University of Queensland in 1982, and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists in 1989. She commenced private practice in radiation oncology at The Wesley in 1995. Dr Burke completed her training at The Queensland Radium Institute, based at the Royal Brisbane and Womens’ Hospital and the Mater Hospital. Her first consultant position was also at the QRI, at RBWH and at the Mater. Having worked as a Radiation Oncologist specialising in breast cancer in Queensland for more than 30 years, Dr Burke has led the way for research into modern radiation therapy techniques for breast cancer in Australia. During her career, Dr Burke has been involved in National Breast Cancer Guideline development for Cancer Australia, as well as eviQ protocol development in breast cancer. She is also Principal Investigator for the STARS trial and the EXPERT trial at GenesisCare’s Wesley centre. While based at Wesley Hospital in Brisbane, Dr Burke has dedicated much of her time to working and consulting in regional Queensland and is passionate about closing the gap in outcomes for rural cancer patients in Queensland. She was essential in launching GenesisCare’s radiation therapy centres in Bundaberg, Fraser Coast and Rockhampton and still regularly consults and treats patients regionally.
