The best way to clean your dentures for a brighter smile

There are a few key 'do's and 'don't's

When it comes to taking care of your dentures, cleaning them the right way, with the right products, is important.

Artificial teeth are much softer and more prone to damage than natural teeth and need to be treated delicately to prolong their lifespan.

The good news about dentures is that, unlike real teeth, you can remove them every night for a thorough cleaning to ensure every nook and cranny has been attended to.

But this doesn’t mean you should grab the toothpaste and start scrubbing.

Ordinary toothpastes may be too abrasive for dentures as the surface can be scratched during brushing. As a consequence, plaque can be accumulated in the grooves and discolouration can appear.

That’s why cleaning products made specifically for dentures are a must. They contain ingredients designed to remove plaque and stains without damaging your dentures.

It’s important to establish a daily cleaning routine for your dentures and make sure you care for them as you would regular teeth.

You can follow these easy steps to keep your dentures in tip-top shape.

1. Soak dentures

After wearing dentures all day, your mouth and gums need time to relax, and your dentures are likely ready for a good clean. Following the instructions on the packet of cleaner, soak dentures in warm water and a good-quality product designed for false teeth.

These cleaning tablets, which dissolve in the warm water, help remove tough stains and plaque and kill odour-causing bacteria that may have accumulated in your mouth and thus on your dentures during the day.

Just like regular teeth, dentures also start to yellow over time. Try soaking them in a dual whitening-and-cleansing product to give them a fresher look.

2. Brush dentures

Once your dentures have soaked for the recommended time, use the remaining soaking water and a soft denture brush to gently brush them clean, making sure you cover the entire surface. Then discard the soaking water and rinse your dentures thoroughly under warm water.

3. Submerge dentures

Acrylic can warp or distort if it dries out, so be sure to soak your dentures in warm water when you’re not wearing them. If you want to give your dentures a deep clean, you can leave them soaking in the cleaning solution overnight.

Following this routine every day can help prolong the life of your dentures, as well as keeping them fresher and cleaner for a bright smile.
